Ch. or §. Elucidation continued — Nomenclature amended

Ch. or § Nomenclature meliorated amended

In this branch of art and science as in every other
Correspondence concomitant to clearness of conception is
aptitude of nomenclature. They go hand in hand. In his Be the subject what it
may, in his own mind
whatsoever new idea
a man presents itself
at any given moment:
he can neither transmit
it to any other mind,
nor so much as be sure
of retaining it in his own
mind unaltered during
any considerable
length of time, without
some correspondently new
appellation, by which it
may be, as it were anchored
in that sea ocean:
without a correspondently
new sign, no retention
of any new thing signified

So long as the stock
of appellations or say,
names, or denominations
belonging to the branch of the
art and science in question
or in a confirmed shape,
so long will the correspondent
ideas, belonging to
it be in a correspondently
confused state

Hence comes the
and that an
irresistible conception
for the matter of which
the remainder of this
section is .

1 To the word rule if as when applied to arithmetic, substitute
the word operation. 2 For the four rules of arithmetic,
meaning addition, multiplication, substraction, dividing, say
the four primary operations, or arithmetic, or say oper
arithmetical operations of the first order

Subject matter of these several operations, the number
in the order of the in which they stand Numeration Table: each number being
greater by one than that by which it is immediately preceded
and less than by one than that by which it is immediately
succeeded. So is it with the numbers expressed in words
at length; so is it with the correspondent figures by in which these same
words at length have their respective equivalents.

Of the several subsequent operations of arithmetic
the series of numbers of which the Numeration
Table is constituted form, as it were, the basis. It
is the universal standard or say object of reference.
To it these same operations or all of them make reference:
reference express or implied

All the numbers which have place in this series
are considered as known: are spoken of as known
They require not any explanation: they admit not of
any explanation: to render them more thoroughly known
they require not any translation to translate them into by being translated into
any other denominations these instead of being rendered
more completely and or promptly known and understood
than they are of themselves they are would only be
rendered less so.

A curious circumstance is — that this seriesfinite
as it is at one end, is at the other infinite: all his life long any man might
go on making addition to it by denominations invented for the purpose
and
and thus as by the last addition
made to it, the
series would not be
brought nearer to an end
than it was at the first.
