Supposed origin
of Geometry or
Posology.

Once upon a time no matter when (for small is
the support which our History can derive from Political
History's usual assistant adjacent Cler and sometimes
substitute Chronology) once upon a time a demand
it must have been a very early time a demand
presented itself for a measuring out for the purpose
of division among divers occupants or sets of occupants
a certain portion of the earth's surface proportion
as between intended occupant and intended occupant
suppose equality: this being the most obvious and
simple upon an equal plain free from all irregularities
and obstructions opposed by rocks and currents here might
not have been much difficulty for sufficient regularity
and equality for practice squares determined by the eye
or by the strait branch of a tree might have followed
one another in any or every direction. But when by
obstruction from any source this regularity was rendered
impracticable then came the a Problem to be
solved how out of each one of a number of these
irregular scraps to mark out portions exactly equal
or approaching to equality with those several regular
ones now this is among the problems which this same
work of Euclid's teaches us how to solve. Recorded
History somewhere bids us look to Egypt for the origin
of this branch of Posology Egypt was early and in the
only habitable parts in it densely peopled. Combined
with the fertility of the soil the result of the periodical
overflowings of the great and only river this
density of population rendered the land in an unexampled
degree valuable hence whatsoever were the portions
allotted to so many individual proprietors exactness in
the marking out of these same portions became in a
proportionable degree a matter of interest
