Ch. 1. Posology in genersl Introduction
§.
Opponents who—
their motives.
2 1
or 1.
Hostile to the improvement
will be all
by whose self satisfaction
and reputation
rested upon the science
in its present state
Whatsoever is the number of the persons in whose instance self
satisfaction or the degree of estimation they are respectively held
in in society depends upon and is in proportion to the degree of usefulness
ascribed to any species of information possessed or supposed
to be possessed by them respectively the same is the number of
persons who can not but by whom in whose minds uneasiness more or less
considerable can not but be produced in proportion as the degree
of usefulness by by the person in question respectively
ascribed to that same species of information is diminished
or 2
So, to the improvers
Proportional to their number will be the number of those by
in whose minds in a degree more or less considerable a
sentiment of ill will and hostility as towards any person by
whom the unpleasant effect in question has been produced
or 3
So, in their instance
will have place the
desire and endeavour
to make him suffer
Proportional to the number of these persons is the number of
those in whose minds in consequence of this same unpleasant sensation
the desire and to see pain sustained by the uneasiness by every
individual by whom in their minds this unpleasant sensation
has been produced will naturally have place: which desire and
endeavour will naturally find view and expression in appropriate
discourse and operation in either shape
or 4
Regrettable this disposition,
but unpreventable,
being rooted in man's
nature: sole practicable
object of endeavour, the
minimizing it is what
the thus holding it up
to view contributes to.
A subject matter and source of regret to a fading mind
is the state of things — this relation between man and man. But
it is rooted in the very nature of man, and can not by any possibility
be eradicated: all the utmost that in the way of relief can be done
is to lessen it: and this is what the a benefit to which the thus placing the matter before
men's eyes has a tendency to produce.
