Notes

III. Experience
II. Ireland
S2. ascendency established

(a) Hardy 200. October 1779. The alteration of the Meeting Bill
which had been sent from home, to a perpetual one expected very
general indignation; other impolitic acts were complained of. The
spirit of the nation flamed higher than ever. Mr Grattan, not
so much imbibing, as diffusing, a large portion of that spirit,
and acting in concert with his friend, Lord Charlemont, moved
a declaration of rights in favour of Ireland... This It fulmined
over Ireland. . . . The popular indignation now vented it
in angry but justifiable resolutions, and variety of addresses.

Hardy 205 Ao 1781. The nation called aloud for independence;
and without a free trade constitution they regarded a
free trade as altogether insecure, and so far of inferior
value.
