of shame, yes: but
this opposes interest
to interest. But for
this as will attack
a fort by the sound
of a bugle horn or
a demonstration out
of Euclid.

Amongst the most unhappily efficient sources of delusion
and erroneous conduct is the expectation the notion entertained of the possibility of
operating upon adverse interest by reason and argument
By fear of indignation produced by argument addressed to others
in whose good opinion and good will they are in
their own eyes more or less dependent, yes: for in this
way personal interest may be acted upon by strange personal interest
in another shape. But by mere reason making
no change in the state of interests by mere reason not bringing
with it either preponderant fear or preponderant hope? as well
might you except to break down the wall of a fortress
by the sounding of a bugle horn or by placarding upon
them a proposition in Euclids elements.
