III. Immoveables
II Nature of the case
§ Immoveables

Of the 12 millions of lots, some there would be, of which at
present True: But the the value Of is thus ample, unquestionably. But on the other hand there are others such , many of
which taken together would not compose a mass of property
any thing a mass of property sufficient for the purchase of so much as a single
meal. And of these there would then unfortunately be hundreds of thousands thousands to go no
further: which the rich ones abovementioned would scarcely be to be reckoned
by hundreds.

15
Per contra: to many
times the content,
it would not yield
a single meal: for
hundreds thus inserted
hundreds of thousands
would be starved

16
Hence to quantity
must be substituted
value.

The simple mode of coming at equally division by rule and compass being
thus inapplicable — , giving equally not in effect but only in
name — such giving to hundreds of thousands under the name of perpetually competent subsistence
immediate starvation and death — to quantity we are
most thus perforce substitute value.

17
Value not so easy
to find a clear idea
for as to pronounced.
Ask Adam Smith
and Ricardo else.

Value — a word was easy to pronounce; not quite so easy
to find a determinate and clear idea for. Ask the best
informed else; of the — of the differently be
some Ask the book or the ghost of Adam Smith;
ask Mr Ricardo who have yet lives; and for the good of his
country bylong may he live!

18
Yet on pain of death
to the hundreds of thousands:
value of each
lot must have been
pronounced by Valuing
Valuers.

Be this as it may, since, on pain of death to hundreds
of thousands, value will value of every each one of the 12 millions
of shares must have been pronounced before the giving effect execution to this plan of supposed universal
benefit competence can so much as have been commenced, —
to pronounce it, it would be necessary to have had we must have had a competent number
of functionaries, where as will call valuers.

19
Valuers thecompetent and
willing, in competent
number where findable?
Competent in probity
and talent? paid or
unpaid? if paid, who
to pay them, and with
what? If imposed how
which working, not that
to be kept alive and
when and what the
worth of their service

But the in any competent number, these competentvaluers
where to bewould they be to be found? right competent in respect of knowledge and active
talent how many? competent in point of probity, how many?
bold points taken together, how many must force And bebe there ever so many of
them in existence, by when are they to be found? When If found, by whom
are they to be paid? paid, in such amount and manner as shall be suffice to engage than
voluntary and contented
service? or, if this can
not be done, are they
to be forced, and by
what means are they to
be forced! and while working under the force by what means are they to be kept alive? |
