Punishments
Cap of ignominy

Execution

Executions which are performed in the most
publick manner shall be performed on
a scaffolding created for this purpose. This
scaffolding shall every where be painted or
hung with black.

guards shall all be clothed in black.
The Surgeons or Surgeons, and the Executioners
with full-bottomed wigs on their head, and white wands in their hands.
The Sheriff and Surgeon and Chaplain in long robes: the Executioner
and Surgeon’s mates in jackets.
The Executioner’s and Surgeon’s mates shall
wear masks: to encrease the terror of the scene
and to screen them in some measure those useful instruments of justice from
the antipathy of the unthinking people populace.
