Of the Several modes of Punishment
Sword of Justice
In the Court of Criminal Justice,
over and or upon the Judgment-seat, shall
be a statue of Justice or of the avenging Angel
larger than life. In the right of the hand of this figure or
otherwise connected with it shall be a sword,
which shall be called the sword of Justice.
It shall be of a determinate size, figure and
weight to be approved of by the supreme
court of Justice.
Punishment by

shall be thus performed.
1. The criminal statue of Justice shall be brought from the
Court to the place of execution: from its
hand shall hang the sword of Justice suspended
by a thread.
2. The criminal shall be bound and stretched
upon the floor, with a a determ particular
part of his body directly under the
point of the sword and [ten] feet below it
at the least.
3. The scabbard shall then be taken from the
sword, and the thread cut, in such manner
that the point of the sword may fall upon
the offender, and wound him in the part exposed.
This is the characteristic punishment for
Homicide committed in defence against Justice.
