Expence of punishment
Hulks

Little by little the expence has been reduced, and
reduced at both ends: it was for some years it
stood at almost £ 27 £ 26: : : it had even got down
to £ 20 : 13 . 7 ½ : but the increase that took
place in has taken place in the price of provisions
within these few years has raised it as to
£ 22 : 4 : 2 ½ £ 22 . 1 . 0 ½ : where it stands at present. At present therefore The
price paid for the board of a single felon scarcely
amounts to scarce half as much again
as admits many honest familys of five are satisfied contented
with: and for this £ 22 work which
according to as far as a valuation made without ,
and as far as appears without specific data,
by persons whose reputation it is that entrusted
in point of reputation at least in making it
appear as high as possible, work to the amount
of £ per man working and non-working
non-working together is performed.

For In the Thames Hulks In the Year 17 the labour was
valued at 9d a day, and no distinction made
between labourers and artificers. At present This Year 1798
in the same situation the labour work of artifi
common labourers is valued at 1s : 2d, and
that of artificers at 1s : 5d. At this rate
if all were worked, the value of the labour
would be a full more than an equivalent for the expence.
