The figure of the skin, however, being irregular, will
never coincide really with the figure if its supports
never exactly cover the whole of the permeable part of the Chamber:
if it is equally extensive in its greatest dimensions,
it will fall short in other places: so far as this
is the case, the deficiency must be supplied by
another support covering of some flexible nature as before but impermeable
to air, such as oiled silk or oiled Linen
for example. Upon this the skin it may be kept down for example by
weights: in which case the only inconvenience to be guarded against will
be, that so far as the weights fall short fail of producing
an exact air tight closure, so far a
space will be exposed at which the air meeting
with less resistance than at the part covered by the
skinhide or by the oilskin, so much of the impulsive
power of the air will force of the atmosphere
will be lost.
