It was on that day that he came of age.
He did not apply to be enter'd upon the footing of a
common man: had he been enter'd upon that footing he
would have been confined to some one particular part of the work
not of his own choosing: which would have effectively precluded
him from taking that comprehensive view of the whole
business which it was his object to acquire obtain.
During the course of his apprenticeship, (through the
indulgence of his Master (Mr Gray) and those who had succeeded
Mr Gray in the disposal of him) he had mostly been put
to indoor work, such as drawing Draughts: a branch of the
business in which he thinks he has made improvements; besides
that and for assisting him in the manual part of it he contrived
and made several years ago a little instrument of his own
which he calls a Curvator
He used however frequently to work along side with
the common men. I cannot say constantly: for it h had all along
