Cet instant, mon cher enfant, je viens
de recevoir ta lettre si longtemps attendue de la dat
du 5me courant. C'est la premiere que personne
a recu de votre part depuis celle du 2d Novr
datè a Berlin. Point de lettre de Memel: on
ne sait pas même si vous aviez été a Dantzich.
Oh, oui. dans une seule ligne. Il y a quelques tems que j'ai été un
peu inquiet sur votre sort, & par consequent
un peu chagrin. Cette jour même, si je n'avois
pas eu de vos nouvelles, j'aurais été
le Sous-Secretaire d'Etat L'anglois déc
a Berlin pour en avoir. Je commencois
deja a mettre dans le plus brillant jour que
je pouvois les avantages que je devois tirer
de ta mort. Je pensois a qui je pourrois
adopter en votre place; mais helas je n'en
trouvois point d'adoptable.

Et toi, etourdi, tu t'es fachè, parce-
que tu n'as pas reçu de mes lettres par la
canal de M. Immerman! & tu oublies toujours
que tu m'as mandè toi-meme de t'ecrire
par celui de M. Klopman. Il t'en a deja
fait tenir trois 3., (a ce que j'espere dont une est
a moitiè de M. Lind: le 1er un melange de
Q.S.P., C.A, & moi: l'e autre 3me, de moi seul.
Je t'ecris toujours dans un espece de François
pour t'exercer & moi aussi. Desormais,
que tu manques de recevoir quelque lettre
que tu auras attendu de ma part, croye bien
que c'est quelque etourderiè de ta propre part
qui en est la cause, & non pas quelqu' oubli
ni de la part de la fortune, ni de la mienne.

10 Gascoyne

L'autre jour notre pere reçut visite de M.
Bamber Gascoyne. M. Gascoyne a louè une
maison dans le voisinage de notre pere, savoir
dans Park Street. Il est venu a t'il dit, pour
renouveller son ancienne amitiè avec Q.S.P.
Savez-vous qui est ce Monsr Gascoyne? je gagerois
que non. C'est lui qui a ètè le Seigneur
de Parking du tems ou notre pere avoît la

la sa maison de campagne. Il a ètè longetemps
Lord du conseil de commerce: il vient
depuis quelques mois d'An fait un des Lords
de l'Amirautè. Cela pourroit il se tourner
a votre profit? Qui sait? voila du moins une
possibilitè.

11 Caust. Alkali

I have got the account for the physician at Petersburgh

1 part alkali to 900 parts water: but this you see
will be liable to vary according to the causticity
of the alkali, & the purity of the water. If the water
has in it a salt with an earthy basis, part of
the alkali will go to the neutralizing the acid of
that salt. The way is to try it in your f mouth

12. Govt. Transports

I have looked, and you may depend upon it,
the Government is free to hire transports & other
vessels wherever it will. I can find nothing in
any Act to hinder them from hiring foreign vessels;
and in point of fact, you know that they do
hire such vessels. If they may hire, by the same
reason they may buy. The reason of their not
buying has been that they have wanted them only
as Transports for a limited time. It is an invariable
rule that Acts laying restraints on private
persons extend not to the King unless specially named.

13. Ship-Timber.

A month or two ago the Imperial Academy
of Sciences at Petersburgh gave a premium
to the amount of about 40 £ St. to a Mr Gressman
a Clergyman somewhere in the dominions
of the K. of Prussia for the best dissertation on
a Question published by the Society last year
concerning the best methods of cutting and preserving
Timber for Shipbuilding. The questions for this year
seem to contain but little interesting. — nothing at all in your way
