The Camp of Cadalagne the 21/10 June 1786

Permit me, my Friend! to give you an account of
the manner in which the Encounter I have had with
Prince Dashkaw has terminated. The Interest you
take in what concerns me authorizes me in it;
and I look upon it as incumbent upon me to lay
open to you all the Particulars of an Affair that
has made but too much noise, and the conclusion
of which was retarded so long.

We met, the Prince and I, upon the Frontiers of
Poland, on the side of Vasilkoff, the 22d of May, accompanied
by our Seconds. I offerred the Prince to fire first,
but he refused it, saying that the wrongs he was
answerable for would not suffer him to make use
of the least advantage. his Second offerred me to Chuse
their Pistols, I accepted it, and drew against him,
but the Pistol tho' well charged, did not go off,
and no blow was given It was then his turn to
fire, but after the Injuries that he acknowledged,
he resisted all the Instances I made him upon
