Queens Square Place
St. James's Park
Thursday 13th March 1789
My dear Coll
The happiness the Tidings of your Coronation gave me, which
was communicated to me by your Brother, in consequence of
the account he had rece'd of it by a Letter from your Friend at Petersburgh
dated the 30th July last is more easy for you to imagine, than it is for me to —
express — advancement is valuable for it's own sake but when
it proceeds from is the consequence of your own owing to the merit of gallant behaviours & good conduct
to deceive it, it greatly enhances that value of it and could
not fail to give me an additional Satisfaction; it was not till
the 8th Octr that I had the pleasure account of it reached me
when I was at Bath, and no Letter whatever has found its' way
from you hither since one I reced
from You 22d June last
which had for its' date the May 23 OS (June 2. NS.) Your, time &c thoughts
however must have been so much engaged by the great
events that have happened upon the Spot & in the
Neighbourhood where you were, together with the your
great distance from Petersburgh & the Hazards attending
the Conveyance of any Letters so far, fully accounts for
my not having had the pleasure of hearing receiving from
you since how much employment soever my anxiety my wishes
& my Impatience have been employed exercised employed during such a
Length of Time — The taking of Ochyakow however was so —
unexpected an Event that it could but raise my
Spirits from by the hopes it afforded me that it were
likely to contribute to facilitate a Peace & thereby —
giving me a Chance of seeing my dear Same
once again during my our Residence here. The
severity of the weather has given us a Russian winter
wch is not yet over, for this last night has produced
so great a Fall of Snows as I never remember in
my Life before; probably the Climate where you are
may have been the same similar & more temperate
on that account as weather is known to travel as well
