31. Octr. 1790.
Dear Sir
I have just been favour'd with a visit from
a young Gentleman (Son of a Mr Love who has lately
settled in this Town) who has left the Crimea
but a short time. he served under Admiral
Mordwinoff & commanded a vessel in the same
Fleet in which Sir Samuel Bentham so particularly
distinguish'd himself. Mr. Love saw him in
good health in October 1700, about the time Sir set
off for Siberian. in Feb last Mr Love saw Major
Newton who was charged with Sir Samuel's account
of his Discoveries to the Empress at Petersburgh from
whence he went to prince Potemkin at Jassi. The
Major left Sir Samuel in good health in November
last vigorously prosecuting a commercial intercourse
between Russia & China. Major Newton said that
Sire Samuel intended to go soon, to petersburgh, and before
