C
Punishments.

The artificial precipice shall be thus made. An iron
rod shall be prepared about the thickness of a man's wrist: it shall
be fastened horizontally between two perpendicular beams. This
machine being placed on a Stone pavement, the rod shall be
raised at least twice as high above the pavement as the criminal
is tall. He shall there be blindfolded and seated on
the rod; his hands being confined in such manner that they
cannot touch either the rod or any thing else whereby he
may support himself: and in that manner he shall be
left for a time to be limited in his sentence or until he
falls upon the pavement. But expedients may be employed
to save his head from the violence of the fall.
