Mr Bentham's Replies & Observations, occasioned
by Mr Sollicitor General's Queries & Corrections
made to the Draught of the Penitentiary Contract

The object of these observations is to endeavour to
confirm if necessary in Mr Soll:s Gen:ls mind the
opinion of the propriety of the amendment he has
been pleased to make, in exclusion of the alternative
that had at first suggested itself to him.

Art. 4. §° 5 & Art. 4 §° 10— With respect to the
power of Assignment Mr B submits to the
amendment with becoming deference: it confirms
but too well the apprehension he had himself
conceived. — All he has to pray is, that it may
be permitted to stand unclogged with the doubt
suggested, & the alternative proposed, in the margin
of §° 5: & that the note there which appears
to have been already cancelled in idea, by the decision
implied by the entry made of the amendment in
§° 10, may accordingly be cancelled by the pen.
Should there be any difficulty about this, he must
pray that the sealed paper may be read Art 1 —
