1819 Dec. 16
Radicalism not dangerous
4
Conclusion
(3) (2) 2
5 or 2
How hard the task
of him who exposes
the falshoods on the ground
of which for preservation
of English institutions
English have been destroyed!
This charge
refuted retraction none,
comes another such,
and so on without end
The last refuted, people
not the better; by power
in hand, the oppressor
is as easily exercised
without as with pretence.
Wolf and lamb! how
often realized!
Think of the task which that man has to perform
whose endeavour it is to expose the falshood of those pretences
on the ground of which, for the more effectual preservation
it is said of "English institutions" (a) English liberties
have been destroyed. A vague An absurd design is professed to
be imparted so ab palpably absurd that the fact of its
being really supposed to be entertained is impossible. This
impossibility is made manifest taken as the a manifestation has
been made. What is the consequence? That the charge is
retracted? Oh no, but some other design of equally
palpable absurdity is then imputed. Confute the second imputation
there comes a third: and so on out of the tyrants
brain comes chimeras after chimeras in any number
a second as fas soon as a presiding one is destroyed.
Now if it were possible suppose the last Chimera destroyed.
What would the accused — and th if not all accused,
what would the the lot accused be the better for it? Not a whit.
The power is still in hand: a power by which every
oppressor in every shape in which that is visited to be exercised can be exercised
at pleasure — the power is still in hand: it can equally
be exercised with under a pretence as without a pretence.
The pretence under which the subversion tyranny has been effected,
are all disappeared: but the subversion remains the same.
5 (a) or 2 (a)
English institutions,
behold the regard for
Scotch and Irish!
Note (a)
(a) English institutions! In this phrase let Scotchmen see
the sort of regard testified for Scottish institutions, Irishmen
for Irish!
[+] The wolf and the
lamb — how often has
that fable been — how often
will it continue to be —
converted into fact.
The devourers
pretences are all refuted:
but the victim is not
the less devoured.
