Thursday Dec. 6. 1821
I saw M. Rey last night, and asked him as for
myself — if the 200£ could be raised, had he friends
in France who would hold themselves bound to
repay the money if he himself should fail to do so.
He said. Oh yes — In Paris and in Grenoble, and
would obtain their undertaking if the money was advanced.
This Morning I saw Mr Herriot the chemist
I asked him two questions.
1. What are the chances for success, if the
distillery be continued with prudence and judgment
2. What assistance he was disposed to give.
Answers —
1. “Mr St Marc is an honest man, a very
able chemist, and a good practical distiller, the
saving of the import duty on the manufacture of
Eau de Cologne, is of itself enough to gain a
great deal of money. I think success is certain.”
2. “I am ready to supply them in the way
of trade with whatever they may need, and at
such a rate of credit as shall be servicable to
them. I have no doubt at all they will be soon
able to repay the advance required.”
Mr Herriot is a man in repute
