<p>On the present occasion this class of injuries<lb/>demands the <del>p</del> more particular notice, in as<lb/>much as the tendency they have to excite the<lb/>irascible appetite &amp; provoke to vengeance is particularly <lb/>strong.<lb/></p><p>[On this head too the English law is remarkably<lb/>defective]<lb/></p>When an injury of this class is <sic>offer'd</sic> to<lb/>a man, the effect of it is that a certain <del>part</del><lb/>share of the reputation of the party injured is <add>thereby instantly</add> taken<lb/>away; power being left him to regain it <add>within a certain interval</add> by challenging<lb/>the injurer to fight.  If at the end of<lb/>that interval no such challenge is given, a farther<lb/>share of reputation is also lost: the reputation<lb/>that depends upon that degree of [the quality of]<lb/>courage the possession is looked to have been disproved<lb/>by the transaction. On the present occasion this class of injuries
