Drawings must be prepared with a fine grained surface
similar to the Drawing Paper. This may be effected by rubbing
two stones face to face with fine sand and water
between — adding fresh sand & water as required 'till
a perfect surface is produced free from scratches which
are mishievous to Drawings, care must be taken to
rub every part of the surface equally. To ascertain
that the Stone is true, callipers should be applied to
the 2 corners and a straight edge laid upon the
surface and back, if true, all light will be excluded.
Chalk Drawings require that the Acid Solution should
not be so strong as for writings. It should not lay upon
the Stone more than a quarter of a minute — after
which pure water may be thrown over. The Inking
roller should be passed over with very moderate pressure
so as to change the lines previous to the Gum being
laid on. In effecting this great care must be taken not
to dirt the Stone or fill up the finer parts of the Drawing.
