Answer
Query 3
(10
In my humble conception of the matter, among
any number of papers containing the assertions of the same
person, and which the same person either has authenticated,
or, in any manner that st by competent authority
shall be required, is ready to authenticate, which it was
that was written first is, at any considerable distance in point
of time, sometimes difficult, sometimes impossible to incapable of
impossible to be ascertained; and that at all times it is not worth ascertaining: —
serving always in case of suspicion of fraud, grounded
in special reason; of which, in the present instance, there
has not, as yet at least, been any pretence.
The intimation insinuation contained in conveyed in and by the words "copies of
"copies" being thus groundless, to place the matter in a still closer light, will beg him to state suppose
a case, and the only sort of case, in which it would
have been well-founded: if, for example a stronger
without the privity of the manufacturers in question,
a stronger (for example my Brother's late foreman of these works the abovementioned Mr Lloyd)
had put into my hands a paper, alledged by him to
have be a copy transcript taken by himself, of an Invoice received
by him from the manufacturers; and I taking with
my own hand, or by some other hand, taking a transcript
from such that transcript as made by Mr Lloyd, had
under the name of a Voucher, and a Voucher requiring
no further evidence, had sent it in to the Board.
This supposed second transcript would have been
the "copy of a copy"; and thus to the p as such open
to the objection, started by Mr Chief Inspector, against
a document so very differently circumstanced.
