24 April 1813
Panopt. Compensation Claim 1. Capital expended
(3) Deficit not claimable
Dissipation none
As for my own part, having all my life long been accustomed
to regulate my own personal expenses upon a
scale of the strictest closest frugality, my own personal expenditure
during that time was as in an nothing — not a tenth part of his
formed a very small part indeed of the aggregate disbursement:
and scarce a tenth part of his.
3. Extra Housekeeping expenses during the part of the year 1792, the Years 1793,
1794, 1795 and 1796. M
My own housekeeping expenses had always
been conducted up[on a scale of necessary frugality not to
say penury corresponding to that of my personal more expenses.
For some years antecedently to my father's death 14s a week
for my lodging in a farm house at Hendon with 7s a week
more for diet, and washing this with no other addition than that of
his coals and candles for myself when (for I saw
no company) constitutes (and a change of cloaths upon perhaps
more in two years) a scale perhaps still more limited constituted the whole of my expenditure
Upon the opening of my Brothers workshops and models
for the reception of company, embarked as I had been on
negotiation work in Ao 1790 in negotiation relation to Panopticon either with
the English or the Irish government the house being occasionally
crowded with visitors of the first class — those of the
Upper House by dozens those of the Lower House by scores [+] [+] Returns from the Manufacturing
concern or
the contract with government being all along regarded
as not only never approaching
but sure
occasion would every now and then arise in which it
could not be regarded as consistent with the rules of prudence
altogether to forbear making correspondent return for hospitality
received, or advances for hospitality expected
