1822. March 14.
Traveller, March 13. 1822.
A meeting of the Inhabitants Vestrymen of
the Parish of St John, Horselydown is to be held to-morrow, to
consider of a Petition to the House of Commons for leave to
bring in a bill to lower the fees of the Court of Regent for the Borough
of Southwark.— It appears that nearly 800 persons
were in a prison by commitments from that Court
last year & that not a few of that number may be considered
as imprisoned, chiefly thro' the excessive fees. We have seen
the following statement:—
Persons committed to Prison.
Whole amount of Debts.
Amount of Fees thereon.
In the year 1819 ...
98
38 3 4
51 15 8
1820 ...
99
36 9 8
45 15 3
1821 ...
107
46 4 7
55 15 0
Total ......
304
120 17 7
153 5 11
According to which statement it appears that the average
amount of each persons debt is between 7 & 8 shillings
Some expense is, of course necessary in the execution of justice,
especially for summoning witnesses; but the fees are
higher in the Southwark, then in any other Court of Regent.
With such facts before them we doubt not that every inhabitant-vestryman
will attend the Meeting & do his
duty.
