Doubt & danger gather frown around
Man, depressed with heavy woe
Sinks into the dust below
In the chains of misery bound.

Tis the victory of despair! –
Faith has left the pilgrim there
Naked, – wearied, – woe – begone!
Heaven's inviting portals close
Louder still the tempest blows
And the pilgrim stands alone.

Glorious !
But when darkened most & dim
Seems the thorny life's rude path appears to him
When the spirit he seems to look in vain
Behind our For one smiling ray of light
Thy fair sun beningant bright
Puts forth all its beams again.

Again Then Thy cheerful smiles return
Again Then Thy holy altars burn
With the mist'd lights of hope & faith
