<p>Thank heaven! Again I tread a social land<lb/> | |||
Where liberty is not an outlawed word<lb/> | |||
Bent down awhile, again erect I stand<lb/> | |||
And visit with my curse that spirit <unclear>abhored</unclear><lb/> | |||
(No! not my curse, – my pity!) which unmanned<lb/> | |||
Trembles & crouches to a despots sword<lb/> | |||
And wears a deep – an everlasting brand<lb/> | |||
To please some insolent, usurping lord!</p> | |||
<p>And man was made for this? – & this fair earth<lb/> | |||
Given by its maker unto <del>hands</del> <add>souls</add> so vile<lb/> | |||
That they have made it <hi rend="underline">hell</hi>: Take heart awhile<lb/> | |||
There is one spot for freedom & for worth –<lb/> | |||
I put the grasping of thy cordial hand<lb/> | |||
