The sores of life's spring were in her cheek
And life's young gaiety played around her heart,
She was as prudent as old age – as meek
As infancy & chose the better part
And as a mother & a wife she bore
Her head pre-eminent – & friends oft talked
Of her mild virtues as they homewards walked
And then she died; – but not till she had set
Her house in holiest order – 'Twas to her
A daily business – ever ready – yet
To leave her husband – children – all alone –
That pang was lightened by the Eternal one
For she had been his constant worshiper.
