of the effects of the torture in a recent instance in<lb/>
Germany, in which, "In six individuals the fear of<lb/>
the bastonnade was more powerful than the fear of death.<lb/>
One innocent man perished, &amp; five determined to<lb/>
perish by a public death rather than undergo the<lb/>
ignominy of that punishment by which it was sought
to <del><gap/> them</del> extort from them the confession of a<lb/>
crime of which they were wholly innocent.</p>
