Maria's Song

When I am good, I'm glad & gay –
And then my mother smiles on me.
And then I hear my father say
"Come, love & dance upon my knee"
But when Maria does what's wrong:
Her mother has no smiles to give:-
And from her father's silent tongue
She Maria will no praise receive.
My parents have done much would do all for me
To make me happy if they could –
And all they wish for is to see
Maria happy, grateful, gay & good.
And is this all, my parents ask –
That I be good & happy too?
This is any easy charming task –
Which I'll be pleased & proud to do.
