Mutilation.

The definition here given me by Lord Coke may
not will not probably be found by every all
persons perrf perfectly satisfactory. Some may
find a difficulty in understanding how it is
that a mans foreteeth or any teeth should be
of any great use in fighting. The like difficulty
may occur with respect to certain other members
the amputation of which may amount to
mayhem, and which are commonly looked upon as
being calculated rather to give life than to
destroy it. It may also be doubted what sort of a member a man's skull may be that
he should lose the use of it. It may also seem
a little singular to some that a man's member,
should be good for nothing but to fight with.
It may also be a question whether the case
be the same with female limbs: & whether
if it be the amputation of the nails, as well as
the teeth may not amount to mayhem: &
whether if it be not it would be mayhem to cut
off a smooth & tender arm.

It might also be doubted upon his Lordships
principles (at least upon some of his Lordship's
principles) whether of Sir Walter Raleigh for
example had cut out his Lordships tongue
it might not have amounted to a mayhem,
for the same reason that it would have been
mayhem in his Lordship to have cull cut off
Sir Walter's hand.
