Art. Now as to pecuniary competition: composed
of offers of purchase, rising one above another, on an
indefinitely extended scale, in which gratuitous service
occupies no more than one degree. Whatever
be the article, numbered among these are generally
recognized, as proper objects of purchase and sale, if the
particulars sort of article be not named, pecuniary
competition, perfectly free, on both sides, will generally
if not universally be acknowledged to be – not merely
a proper, but the only proper arrangement for determining,
on each occasion, by what individual it shall
be obtained, and at what price. When application,
however, comes to be made of it, then comes diversity
in opinion, or at any rate in affection and language:
if on the occasion in question, the proposed
