sent from Assizes, they are allowed 1d/2 a day he
had been there three times & never saw any body
at Work.

The Convicted Felons are kept at Country Goals
because the Bridewells are insecure – some have
been kept for 3 or 4 years when the Term of their
Transportation don't begin till the time they are put
on Board, wch is a great Hardship – the Galley Slaves
in France commending in 24 Hours after their
Conviction, tho' they may be kept some Months
before they are put on Board.

How many Hours are the Convicts employed a
day in raising Ballast?

I have attended the Convicts since the 20th
of August 1777 – they were rather sickly when I first
attended them – there were two Hospitals. One was
too small & I recommended it to be inlarged wch was
done – there were 24 sick then in both Hospitals chiefly
with Fevers & Venereal Complaints – I believe believe the
People brought the Disorders with them as they
generally died between their Coming & the 10th. or 12th.
day – they were most fresh People.

I know the Platforms, I think they are Airy,
there is sufficient Air comes in to persons the
Men, there are Port Holes – I have had all the
Convicts in a morning turned out where they lay
& there was no Smell.

They lie two upon Beds of Straw.
