The above foregoing is taken from the theory of
the first sovereign French National Assembly: the following example
is taken from the practice of it. – Would it be
for the advantage of Shall the estates at present
in the hands of the Clergy, be taken out of their
hands, and sold to raise money for the supply
of the exigencies of the State? Stated according
to the mode of investigation inquiry pursued in this
book the question would stand thus – Would it be
for the advantage of the whole nation (Laity and
Clergy together) that the estates at present in the hands of the
Clergy should be taken out of their hands, and
sold to raise money for the supply of the common exigencies
of the whole? What would be the sum of suffering
on the one part produced by such a measure: on
the part of the Clergy by each of whom the loss of the whole
or of such or such a part of his for income would
be to be sustained in the first instance, in the second
instance what if any would be the pain of danger
to other persons individuals in possession of estates from the
application and extension of such an example,
and the extension of the principles that gave birth
to it, and what the pain of apprehension grounded
in the prospect of such danger? – On the other
