uses.
To a work which professes to teach what
belongs to any branch of science the first thing
which should be said of it after some extremely
general explanation of what is meant by it, should
be what is it good for.

Dr Fordyce on being
asked the use of what Chemistry was
good for said "What are you
good." Answers more
satisfactory given by
Torbergman & Professor
Fairish.
Dr Fordyce a man of no small eminence in his
day for his knowledge of what the comparatively little
of what at that day was known of Chemistry but
not much less so for his bluntness on being asked one
day what Chemistry was good for gave for sole answer
to this question another question viz what are you
good for answers somewhat more satisfactory than
this were given Anno or thereabouts Torbergman
in his Treatise on the application of Chemistry
to the arts of common life and abundantly more so
of late by at Cambridge by Professor Fairish.

may expect to receive if in his eyes
