7 Apr. 1811
Since the time of my delivering the vivâ voce evidence of
which the Minutes of which be before me, I have done
what extraordinary as it may seem I had not been
done before having had in truth no time for it – I have searched looked
into my own book works on the subject and in particular for the
one intituled Panopticon &c.
In these this works I have found in the following parts bearing
matter bearing upon all the several points to which the
questions I had to make answer to were directed.
1. Panopticon. In the body of the work on the subject of the
checks requisite to the conductor of establishment
of the kind in question – Letter 12 intitlued Contractor's
checks, and containing 8 pages viz. from 67 to 75.
2. In the Postscript Part to §. 2 intituled Management in
what hands and on what terms, 30 pages, viz. from 19
to 58.
On these pages what the a point I regard was the suf
in the case of a manager doing the executing carrying on the management
by contract in a building constructed upon the Panopticon
principle, the sufficiency of the checks therein therein proposed all of them
depending more or less for their efficiency in a greater or more or less degree
on that peculiar plan of construction: a point I did not
regard as the insufficiency of the check applied by the Statute
in question viz. the clause inhibiting the Keeper of an
establishment of the kind in question from being himself the
furnisher of any of the m articles employed in the maintenance
of the prisoners.
