Enquiring into the origin of the opposition between particular
and general interest we shall find the root of it it rooted in a state
of things produce by circumstances causes inbred in the very nature
of society: Necessary to the very existence of society was
a system of prudence of some sort of other, however imperfect
and inadequate. At its origin it must therefore have every
where been the work of a raw and inexperienced age. In
every line of service industry, the labouring hand with in the original
and most natural state of things have had at least an
equal share in the adjustment of the quantum of the recompense.
But in this line of service industry the faculty of rendering
the service was from the first as in most if not all branches it must remains continue to the last,
an object of monopoly. At the same time the demand for
this species of service, would must on the part of the customer, have
been urgent up to every the highest degree of urgency. Under these
circumstances, were it not for the controul of superior power,
the price, the excess of price, in a word the extortion would
almost from the first have naturally been without limit: and how
much more disposed the sovereign power was to enhance or
rather for its own benefit to originate the extortion than to repress
it, will be seen as we advance.

rendered in the way of judicial procedure to suitors by the so many

it was a service of a continuous sort, performed rendered by an indefinite
multitude of distinguishable operations: and each moment operation

setting their his own price upon their own services it became of course
to each sharer in the privilege, an object of endeavour study to push swell to its
maximum the number of those distinguishable services – of those
distinguishable operations: of the distinct several sources
from each of which a distinct mass of was
