Parly Reform Sinecures

General consequence – that to any man who has plan
to do any act of mischief for his own benefit, it ought
to be made his interest so to do.

Of this theory doctrine, if consistently pursued, amongst
other consequences would for example be this – viz. that
with all convenient speed it would be right and
fitting that Lord Melville should be reinstated, in
that office from which by the violence and popular prejudice of party he
it happened to him to be driven so much to the disadvantage of
his Majesty's service, in the manner we all know
of: reinstated, and with the benefit⊞ of a time for repealing
that law which was
found so invidious
and at the same time of whatsoever number
of fifth chances in the wisdom of Lord Eldon may be found necessary to place set
the noble Treasurer him compleatly at his ease. True it is that, by
one of those times a law of that most efficient class which possess the that
happy faculty so often mentioned, the faculty of
executing themselves his Lordship would thus in such case be
authorized to apply to the purpose of constituting
a reward for merit embodied in his own person whatsoever
portion of the public money was in might should by his Lordship's
wisdom be deemed construed and taken to be requisite
and necessary for that purpose. But that
in those such hands any such authority would be exposed
to any hazard of being abused, would be a proposition
still more untenable in this case than in
that of Mr Percival. The virtue of Mr Percival
having never been put to trial would in respect
of evidence of purity stand on no better footing
than in respect of evidence of genuineness any
bright genius would stand that a man had just
received from his : whereas the⊞ ⊞ the noble Lord Melville Ex Treasurer
having according
to the observation os
lately and so truly made
by his Right Honorable
son been acquitted by his
Peers in the same
respect the virtue of the noble Ex-Treasurer Lord Melville stands exactly on
the same footing as a piece of gold, yes if from gold
fresh and hot, as
it comes out of the
refiners fire.
