Sinecures

On the part of an agent or trustee whom that in whose breasts
are found invited that regard for his principals interest
which is prescribed by probity, and that regard for his
own reputation which is prescribed by prudence, two
objects objects of attention go hand in hand: 1. that what
is done by him shall be rightly done, and that being
rightly done it shall by his principal be seen to be
so.

As to our this Committee, howsoever it may have been
with regard to the first of those objects, the of the attention
shown to the other there can not be much much can not be said
to boast.

In their Appendix, viz. in and by the last of the 85 Nos
contained in it, they have given us a paper bearing for its
title List of Offices from which Returns have been required.

Offices being here the objects indicated as the sources those from
which these communications have been required – Offices
and not Officers – fictitious things not real persons, no
such indication by which any security can be given
for compleatness or correctness, no indication by which any
either on those by whom or on those from whom the information
is required, any responsibility on either of these
scores can be imposed, is so much as professed here
to be given. In this state of things No engagement to any such effect on any such score having
been contracted, breach of engagement is an imputation
to which they can not with justice be said to stand exposed.
