Sinecures
☞ How the emolument of the principal may be a fixt sum while
that of the Deputy is a variable one: a natural distinction which belongs
not to this place, but to that where classification is considered.
The case which to constitute one sinecure requires
two persons and no more than two persons – viz. the
principal, the Sinecurist who does nothing for what he receives, and his
deputy by whom, if any thing be done that which whatever is done
is done this case though it is to be hoped the more
common one is not the only one. And Of a number several divers
persons, bearing the same official name and charged
in appearance charged with the same functions, what
may happen is, that whatever is done is done by a
part of the number, the part of receiving something
and doing nothing, being left to one or more. In this
case all the working bees all of them together may
be considered as so many co-deputies to the drone or
drones.
