Panopt. Observat. on Holford's Report
III. Comes now the charge of ex third article of charge –
the charge of extortion.
Whereas "for such articles as may be properly admitted"
into the said prison no undue price ought to be demanded that is
undue, yet by the said appointed manager with a view to his
"own profit" as aforesaid to wit in all instances, or in many instances or at least in some instances would have been demanded and
not only demanded but taken, a price such prices as would have been
undue.
By "undue" it is to be presumed must have been meant
excessive too great high: putting too upon the articles in question
too low small a price would hardly find its place among this in this or any
list of articles of charge.
Of th a charge of this nature the futility frivolousness had already
received to the knowledge of him by whom it is urged its exposure in the work abovementioned.
To the unmeaningness of the term employed in it – to
the impossibility of assigning to them any meaning which
being intelligible shall have any other than the dishonest disingenuous
and dishonest meaning which on that occasion was on the occasion of the words goodness and luxury became
necessary to drag into light the same observation applies will be found
in this case as that which may be seen applying in
their case.
To this observation two four others may now here be added.
1. That this charge about excessive price is in contradiction with the two
other about goodness and luxury, since if what is there
meant to be designated supposing that anything determinate was
here meant to be designated by the word luxury, had anything of real evil in it this
excessive price this dearness would as far as it went,
operate in correct diminution and correction of it.
2. That for articles of the sort description in question in such the situation in question it is not in the nature
of any price to be undue.
3. That in the instance to the appointed Manager, as in the instance of any other
person, profit considered by itself, and as being pure from evil in any shape, clear and
price is not itself an evil, but by the whole amount of it a good.
4. That this good in respect of this good this profit, the intended Manager would
after the small remnant that remains of his own life would have had
for its his successor the public at large.
