Fallacies
Under whatsoever name the divinity may be worshipped
the decay of piety will at all times furnish to the votary
an inexhaustible theme of lamentation. It wa such to the priests of Gaul:
it was such to their more fortunate rivals. It would
flow from them (this pious effusion) it would flow from them in seams: it would flow
from them out of season.
Even this may be seen flowing from Lord Grenville;
if with that noble and quondam Lord it can be said to have been at

conciliatory endeavours of the Government."
At the time of this lamentation what was the real state
of the case? What was done was done in one a certain form: according to the noble
worshipper of form it ought rather to have been done in a
certain other. Had it been done in that other he might with
no less facility have taken the opposite side and still contended that the
form in which it was done was not the form in which it ought to have
been.⊞ ⊞ To this votary the noble voter of
form one main object
as is manifest, was
the preaching and inculcating
the worship of
forms: and in this one
regard it may be presumed he did not toil labour in vain. As to the measure by which his Lordships opposition in this form was called forth, it belongs not to the present purpose. The main object was
