Rid Yourselves
§.1. Prelimy Definitions.
1.
Union between you
and Ultramaria, under
the same rulers, is
a burthen to you: rid
yourselves.
Proofs follow: judgment
yours.
2.
Follow distinctions,
but for which, all truth
must be alloyed with
falshood.
3.
1. Distinction first.
1. Spaniard's interest

4.
Distinctions second
In Spain,
1. Universal interest
2. Particular do.
5.
Distinction third –
(applying to particulars).
1. Subject many's interest.
2. Ruling and influential
few's do.
6.
4. Distinction 4. In
the ruling, and otherwise
influential few, interest
of the aggregate, of particular
classes, and of
individuals.
7.
Without practical error,
no one of these distinctions
can be over-looked.
To each class
belongs a particular
interest, liable to be opposite
to the universal:
so, to each member of
each.

his share in all the
particular interests in
which he shares: deducting
the sum of hia
shares in any particular
interests which happen
to coincide with
the universal interest.

Classes, whose particular
interests should permanently or
in opposition are those particularly liable
