GRADUATION. SCALE of CRIMES.

a number of risques rather than the greatest – make that his least risque which
is attached to the least mischievous crime; that his greatest which is annexed
to his greatest; & so of the intermediate ones.

Cheating, Larceny, Robbery, Murder, Burglary Arson – It is hard a mischief that
a man should be beguiled out of his property by false pretences; but it is
not so great an one to the community, as that it the same should be stolen for instance
out of his pocket in the Streets – for the persons who may hear of the first
misfortune, tho' naturally disposed to refer it to their own case, yet, from confiding in
their own superior sagacity, will not entertain much apprehension of being made
the dupes of those artifices. They will Each man will think their his own caution a tolerably secure
antidote against the danger, but it is not so in the latter cases, as the
act is sudden & mechanical; no body can flatter himself with the hope of allways
having his attention awake to frustrate such attempts: he behoves them to be
affected with a superior degree of anxiety. It is a greater mischief therefore having therefore that
a man should have his property by than by cheating: mischievous, than cheating: but to lose it by
robbery is still more so – the loss of property we will say is the same: but
force or at least threats are added to the loss the means employed to wrest it: this spreads itself
among those accustomed to pass the same way: and they learn that not only a a danger awaits part of their property but their lives – their anxiety is therefore much
augmented. Still however he has time to prepare himself to repell the danger
by his courage or elude that which respects his life by his facility: and the
time of it is confined to infrequent and occasional interrupted periods. His Habitude
where the greatest part of his time is spent & the greatest part of his moveable property is lodged still remains a secure Asylum.

But Burglary invades him even here: and at a time when he

besides that no mischief alarm of this sort can happen but an whole family are the
immediate sharers. The reflected tenor is proportional. The mischief of Burglary therefore is yet
greater than that of Robbery.
