21 Jany. 1802 After H1
Armed Memorial

It appears plain enough (I presume) to Your
Lordship that at the very time when Mr Long
issued his order to me for a Memorial, the those very orders
were accompanied with dictated by a most determined decided
though secret determination on his part, not to suffer
it to reach the Board. The views with which it
could not but be penned by me, and the views
with which it was ordered and could not but be
received by him, every utterly irreconcilable;
Nor were it possible than incompatibility
should escape his eye. If indeed it had been my
determination to give up the plans entirely, and
to pen the Memorial accordingly, then indeed
the views in both cases would have met, and
the Memorial would have stood some chance of
being handed up. But from the tenor of my part
of this correspondence, down to the time here in
question, Your Lordship will judge whether it
were in the nature of things that Mr Long should
have entertained any expectation of regard
to
seeing me adopt, and without so much as
an invitation so to do, any such plan of suicide:
besides that, at the time of the penning this Memorial
there was nothing asked in it, which I
did was not, from the complexion of things, as reported to
me by Mr Nepean, I was not prepared to see
complied with.
