17 Jany 1802

My Lord, if there be one person more who is more incompetent than
another, to the task, were it even imposed on
him as such, of diffuse and superfluous eccentric discourse – one who for has always felt himself more compleatly destitute and speechless in every quarter of the field of generality and common place I do not incurr by disdain through
discrimination and disdain – though of that perhaps
there may be something – but of by
simple and – by natural and radical incapacity, it is the
individual here in question. I do not mean Not that I mean
to represent him as
that he is altogether incapable of finding expression,
for no in words, prompted by the occasion,
for such ideas as appear to bear directly
and closely on upon the very point, to upon which it
becomes necessary for him at the moment to
bring to bear such articles as he can muster up,
out of his scanty and unpractised unready nomenclature.
What I mean to say is – that as there are
few men who are more sensible to the value of
time, few men whose thoughts have been
more diligently bent on all occasions bent upon takjubg the precise point in
question in every case and keeping clear of
all discussions that be wide of it – so there
are men perhaps, who if they had it in
their wish would find it less in their power
to stray from it.
