The men have a drink at their command.

I allow them about 1 1/2 pints of small beer
when they work in the warren. – The Ale is allowed
them.

Their friends brought them provisions at first: which
I refused, as they convey'd saws and other instruments
in order for their escape.

I gave them 6 lb of bread in Jany last,
but I have alter'd it since to 5 1/2, as I thought the
6 lb too much

They have 4 1/2 quarts of Broth 4 days a
in a week besides.

They have rice broth for breakfast

I think this allowance is better than the Navy
allowance.

In winter I give them salt provision for
fear the Ice should prevent injury on them.

And as to this their work, the Law made no provision,
no mention was made in the Act where
we were to land the Ballast.

I had authority from the -House
to work on shore below Woolwich, but not higher.
I got leave from the Board of Ordnance
to make use of a piece of Marsh Ground
Adjoining the Warren; and there I began to land
Ballast in order to make a bank.

I soon saw we could be of use to the Warren
by making an Embankment, and I had
leave to make it.
