Last Scene of Goethe's Tasso

Antonio – Fly then – If yet thou would escape the snares
With which thy enemy murder thee!
How great the triumph of that enemy!
Unhappy man! – I cannot bear thy woes –
Woes yet unknown – & therefore worse to bear; –
The tempest bursting unexpectedly –
The form that in the twilight meets the eye
Its baleful image o'er uncertainty.

Tasso – after a long pause
Do then thy Duty – serve the Tyrants well –
Thou dost the princely mandate but fulfil!
Do then thy Duty – let me die – I go –
(Thy staff is broken) – willingly tho' slow
