considered as a means employed in and for
the attainment of that end — To this purpose
comes the need of the ideas expression to which
is given by the two mutually and intimately
connected words Rule and Principle

A rule is a word employed to denote some
suggestion respecting some mode of action considered
as a means of producing good or excluding evil.

A rule may be the expression either of the
state of the will or of the state of the understanding
of him from whom it emanates: — if of the will,
it is equivalent to a command: — if of the understanding,
it is equivalent to information or advice. —

A principle is a word employed to give
intimation allusive to, and for the purpose in hand serving
instead of a corresponding rule.

A term of employed upon the occasion is
composed of the word principle performing the office
of a noun substantive preceded by a location in one
or other of several forms performing the office of a
noun adjective. — These forms are the following, —

1 An universal adjective

2 An universal substantive performing the office of an adjective
Example. The non disappointment principle.

3. A substantive performing the office of an adjective preceded
by an adjective — Example The Greatest Happiness principle.

4. An adjective or a substantive performing the office of
an adjective preceded by an indefinite quantity of matter
constituting all together, a compound adjective
