English Editor's Preface or Advertisement

An application really made for the Editor to the Author
produced a letter of from which the following what follows which
is all that is material has been extracted is an extract

The history of the present work is somewhat
remarkable. It was commenced commenced between
40 and 50 years ago: the exact date appears not, nor
is it material. [+] [+] In Mr Bentham's
manuscript part of
it is in French English, part
in French. Which was
first written it is seems not
easy to say: which
ever it was, the other
does not appear to
have been confronted
with it.
In part it was The first Part of it was written by Mr Bentham
in either in French: its other part it was either Mr Bentham
or overwritten by him in French: one the part as it
should seem at a distance of time from and without comparison
with another
. At the desire of Mr Dumont, the aggregate
mass in company with the other works to for which
the author, as well as the world at large in general [is seen by
every body to be] stands so largely indebted to that his
accomplished Editor intelligent and ingenious friend was together with what he
had been writing much about in the same interval the same time on the
subject of Punishments placed at the disposal of his
intelligent and faithful friend: and from these in the
year 1811 came forth the first time at Paris
the work in two Volumes with the intituled title of Theories des
Penses et des Recompenses
of which that which has
been employed in the present edition is forms the second.. At
Paris a third edition of the French is come out or is immediately about
to come out at this present time.
