On the other hand nothing could would be more absurd than
to expect on the part of the professional in general, from the
lowest rank to the highest, from the Attorney's Clerk or Sheriff's Officer
to the Judge highest rank of Judges any cordial sincere and active concurrence towards
the removal of the mischief or any the smallest minutest particle of it.
It would be an absurdity not less flagrant, not to expect from
that same quarter, with as little exception, every degree and form
of opposition that presented a prospect of success. To entertain
any other expectation would be to expect⊞ ⊞ the body of West India Planters to concurr in the abolition of Negro Slavery, the Pope to
become a convert be converted to Protestantism, or the Emperor of Morocco to organize
for his dominion a constitution upon the model of the British.

In England, at different times Statutes have been passed
for the amendment of the Law. Of Concerning Respecting the origination of them
a few scattered lights might here and there be collected from the
Journals and the histories of the time. But without looking into ransacking
documents two propositions are sufficiently established by the very nature
of man in the form given to him by that profession of man and the nature of the case. As a body, either the lawyers men of law
took no part in the business refrain, or they took no part in it, but
to obstruct it, and to reduce lessen the effect of it as low as possible, and
to see that what could not be avoided to be done was done on their part should be done with as good the bad
grace a grace, and with as little effect as possible. So far from
laying the axe the axe being laid to the root of the tree, no considerable branch of
it was ever tracked: whatever has been done to it, especially by hands (especially
by such hands, and without some sort of assistance from hands of the description
nothing in that way hue would ever have been done) has been done
not in the way of extirpation but of pruning: cutting out here
and there an unsightly twig, to improve the health, and prolong give better health and longer increase the vigour and longevity
the duration of the rest life to what remained behind.
